M.S. 136 STUDENT DRESS CODE

In collaboration with parents, students, and staff, the school remains committed to preparing young people for leadership and professional roles. We believe that members of the school community have a responsibility to dress in a manner which balances diversity of individual expression with a commitment to communal learning.

In light of this responsibility:

  • All students must wear a top from the list of uniform shirt options and it must be visible (i.e., sweatshirts can go under a uniform shirt).

  • All students must wear black pants.

  • Clothing should not be disruptive to the educational process or be offensive to members of the Dewey community both in and out of the classroom.

  • Clothing or decorative items that degrade members of the school community in relation to the following actual or perceived characteristics is prohibited: race, color, religion, creed, ethnicity, national origin, citizenship status, age, marital status, partnership status, disability, sexual orientation, gender, sex, gender identity, economic status, predisposing genetic characteristics, or status as a victim of domestic violence or sexual offense.

  • Clothing may not contain images depicting or promoting alcohol, tobacco, drugs, obscenity or violence.

  • Clothing on the lower body must be longer than fingertip length, including shorts and rips on jeans.

  • Undergarments should not be visible.

  • As per NYCDOE regulations, hats, hoods and other headwear may not be worn in school. Exceptions may be granted for medical conditions and religious expression.

  • Shoes need to be worn with safety in mind e.g. daily recess, gym, fire drills, etc. No slides or flip flops.
